Voltaire delivers infectious new EP ‘VWAY’

By Todd Anderson

Broward County, Florida artist Voltaire has delivered a fresh new EP called VWAY. The project marks his first self-produced release, and it focuses on the emotional dissonance the musician often feels within relationships he gets involved in. Complementing this potent theme is an emotive and layered soundscape that feels infectious and sharply-crafted at many points.

The moody, expansive opener “Delivered” gives a prime example of the project’s sound, with cerebral, creeping keys and a heavy, rumbling rhythm section. More melodious cuts like “Love Me?” display Voltaire’s versatility, with a mysterious, immersive sound taking on a softer and airier feel. Then there’s project highlight “Marilyn Monroe”, which takes the infectiousness up a notch with its memorable sound and sharp songwriting.

A potent project from Florida’s Voltaire overall, VWAY contains a ruminant and mercurial sound and style that draws the listener deeply into the EP’s atmosphere from the get-go.

An Interview with Love James

By Damilola Grey

Dami: What inspired you to start making music?

Love James: Not sure exactly. I’ve been writing melodies in my head since I was a little kid and throughout the years, so many artists have inspired me to where I am now with my sound.

Dami: Can you tell us some of the artists who’ve inspired you and your sound?

Love James: FKJ, Mk.gee, King Krule, Dominic Fike, Lowertown, and the Front Bottoms.

Dami: How would you describe your sound?

Love James: Sonically warm and exciting, lyrically melancholic and introspective.

Dami: You just dropped a single titled “feel how you feel”. Can you tell us more about it?

Love James: “feel how you feel” is a song that I’ve had for a while and figured I’d release it because the new stuff I’ve been working on is a different vibe. I didn’t want “feel how you feel” to be one of those songs that will sit in the vault forever and never see the light of day. At its core, the song is about how important it is to express and move with feeling.

Dami: What does the track mean to you?

Love James: The track to me means so much. I make songs everyday and the ones I release aren’t random. This one in particular I fell in love with right from the start. From the jazzy guitar licks and chords to mu auto tuned vocals and the swanky drunk drum beat that lies underneath. It tickles my brain and gives me chills every listen. I could listen to the beat alone for hours. To me that is a song worth releasing; a piece of art I created that I love. That is all that matters.

Dami: What do you want listeners to take away after listening to it?

Love James: Nothing in particular. If they like it and take something away after from it, that’s awesome and I love to hear what people have to say about my music but it’s not something that is on my mind all the time. I don’t ever have an idea of what I want people to take away after listening. If it makes them feel something, then that’s all that matters to me.

Dami: What’s your creative process like?

Love James: It changes a lot and has definitely evolved since I started. Most of the time, it starts with me and a melody or chord progression and I’ll go from there. Other times, I’ll write lyrics before even making the beat. I try to always keep it interesting by doing something new and keep an open mind when creating. There are no rules and that’s why I love it so much.

Dami: What are 3 words you’ll use to describe your music?

Love James: Vibrant, versatile, voluptuous.

Dami: What’s next for you after “feel how you feel”

Love James: Probably a couple more singles and eventually an album/EP. I really like themes and albums that capture an overall vibe, so I’m excited to dive into that soon.

Dami: Any idea for the themes for them?

Love James: I’ve really been infatuated with death/afterlife/rebirth as of late so I’ll probably base it around that.

Dami: What are some dream collabs you have?

Love James: Ging, FKJ, Dominic Fike, Bakar.

Dami: What would you say was your most memorable moment of the year?

Love James: Filming the music video for my song “feel how you feel”.

Dami: What you got for your fans this coming year?

Love James: Just more music. Only released a couple songs this past year and I’m excited for them to hear more.

Wrek shares fresh single “Over”

By Damilola Grey

New Jersey artist, Wrek is back with his highly anticipated single titled “Over”. This is also his 4th single of the year.

On “Over”, Wrek talks about the flow of various relationships he has experienced and how it’s similar to the way current relationships work. When Wrek was creating this masterpiece, it meant more of healing for him but now it signifies closure. Wrek expresses his emotions, in a chill manner, with a “Smino-esque” soundwhich is a result of his growth as an artist- one which is very noticeable, especially for those tapped in with his career. When I asked Wrek about his new sound, he told me “Nothing lasts forever at the end of the day, but I can say the sound is here to stay, or even do a new addition to the artillery haha”. The heavenly production of this single was handled by typhoon

Wrek has had an amazing year dropping banger after banger and what better way to end this year than with a single as amazing as “Over”. His growth as an artist has been amazing to watch and we can’t wait to see what the New Jersey native has in store for us next year.

Jxylen releases expanded version of thought-provoking debut album with ‘PROJECT MAYHEM: FIGHT CLUB EDITION’

By Jacob Ezra

At the beginning of this year, Massachusetts artist Jxylen appeared on our platform with the release of his debut album, PROJECT MAYHEM. We were captivated by the record’s left-field, layered sonics and pensive lyricism, which often raised concerns about today’s society, criticizing its constructs in a thought-provoking manner. Adding four tracks to the original version of the album, Jxylen now returns with the deluxe version in PROJECT MAYHEM: FIGHT CLUB EDITION, tacking on a set of poignant songs that continue to build upon his cerebral style and darkly atmospheric sound

The additional tracks in question include “STILL TIRED”, “ALIVE!”, “GOD BLESS AMERICA”, and “SKT 3”, featuring Dayvii and KENZO.. These four cuts blend cathartic frustration with well-thought out, frequently lucid lyricism in a way that sets Jxylen apart among many rappers occupying the underground space. A poignant cocktail of powerful aggression and reflective vulnerability are a part of what makes these tracks so memorable, as they take on an emotional richness and depth. In particular, “ALIVE!”, produced by AUR, exemplifies these qualities as Jxylen attacks the ethereal instrumental with much ferocity in his delivery, while uttering highly affecting lines like “when the trauma’s running deep/ so quick to bleed on your own blessings”. “GOD BLESS AMERICA” blends beautiful strings samples with deep bass, raw percussion, and imposing vocals from Jxylen, while he delivers a personal manifesto of sorts with his verses, with lines such as “fuck the world since ’99” capturing the essence of the song’s urgent messaging.

PROJECT MAYHEM: FIGHT CLUB EDITION is an LP that is unafraid to wear its heart on its sleeve and take risks both content-wise and sonically- factors that are often missing from today’s musical landscape. It appears that Jxylen is holding nothing back on the album, rhyming as if the world might end and letting everything off his chest, atop a series of haunting instrumentals that capture this in sound.
